Anora’ Review: Her Glass Slipper Is a Swarovski Stiletto

Mikey Madison delivers a career-defining performance in the Palme d’Or-winning film Anora, directed by Sean Baker. The movie tells the story of a romance between a sex worker and a wealthy heir, showcasing the depth and complexity of their unlikely relationship.

Sometimes, a film truly embodies the classic notion of a “star-making turn,” and Anora undoubtedly achieves this distinction for the year. I’ve had the privilege of watching it twice, and each time, I left the theater with a sense of euphoria, captivated by the remarkable performances, the film’s rhythm, and its intricate emotional landscape. The only lingering question is not whether Anora will make someone a star, but rather, who exactly will benefit most from its magic.

The most evident and deserving answer is Mikey Madison, who takes on the role of Anora with both grace and intensity. Madison is no stranger to the screen; she previously portrayed Sadie, a member of the Manson family, in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood, and played Max, the eldest daughter of Pamela Adlon’s character, on the critically acclaimed FX series Better Things.

Madison has consistently demonstrated her talent, embodying a young ingénue with an exceptional range of expressions—effortlessly blending bratty confidence with youthful vulnerability. However, her role in Anora demands an even broader spectrum of skills, challenging her to navigate elements of slapstick comedy, heartfelt romance, and profound tragedy. Madison’s portrayal also involves a physically demanding performance, as she dances in scanty outfits and even throws a few powerful punches. To embody Anora, Madison had to deliver a performance that was both emotionally resonant and physically dynamic, transforming into a character who immediately draws strong reactions from those around her. Every second she is on screen, Madison’s magnetism holds the audience’s attention.

The film is also a milestone for Sean Baker, who has steadily built his reputation through films like The Florida Project and Red Rocket. These works have garnered critical acclaim and attracted a loyal following. However, with Anora, Baker has taken his filmmaking to new heights. The film not only received rave reviews but also earned the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in May, solidifying Baker’s status as one of contemporary cinema’s most compelling voices.
